Job Summary:
A Phlebotomist is responsible for drawing blood from patients for medical testing, blood donations, research, or transfusions. They must ensure that samples are properly labeled and stored for analysis. Phlebotomists also play a crucial role in ensuring patient comfort and safety during the blood collection process.
Responsibilities and Duties:
1. Collect blood specimens from patients using venipuncture or finger sticks.
2. Verify patient information and ensure accurate labeling of samples.
3. Follow established protocols for blood collection, handling, and storage.
4. Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
5. Assist with the transportation of specimens to the laboratory for analysis.
6. Educate patients on proper procedures for blood collection.
7. Monitor patient reactions during and after blood collection.
8. Adhere to infection control and safety guidelines.
9. Document all blood collections accurately and timely.
10. Assist with administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments and answering phone calls.
Qualifications and Skills:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Certification in phlebotomy preferred
- Strong attention to detail
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work well under pressure
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Basic computer skills
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality
- Physical stamina to stand for long periods and lift heavy equipment
