LICENCE RENEWAL

  • Renewal cadence: Renewal of your license occurs every 2 years
  • Renewal fee: $136
  • Required contact hours: 1,000 working in the last 5 years
  • License and certification renewals can take 5 to 10 days to be processed​. If a renewal applicant is required to complete a background check as part of the renewal process, additional processing time beyond 10 days is required.

Important Things to Know

  • Payment is only accepted by credit or debit cards using a Visa or MasterCard.
  • The Maryland Board of Nursing requires applicants for Temporary Licenses to use a Permanent Mailing Address when completing the application for licensure. This is especially important for licensees who are not going to reside in Maryland for an extended period of time.

Process

Permanent License

  1. Submit an application online and pay the fee.
  2. Request a fingerprint packet from mdbon.nets@maryland.gov. Include your name and mailing address.
  3. Once received, have your prints rolled/inked on the cards and mail the completed card and associated fee to CJIS – Central Repository, P.O. Box 32708, Pikesville, MD 21282-2708

    1. You may also overnight the fingerprint card to 6776 Reisterstown Road, Suite 102, Baltimore MD 21215.

    2. Please include a check or money order made out to “CJIS Central Repository”.

    3. Fees are found on CJIS’s website http://www.dpscs.state.md.us/publicservs/bgchecks.shtml
  4. Request verification of licensure via Nursys from your original state of licensure. If this state does not participate in Nursys, you will need to contact that state’s BON and request verification be sent to the Maryland BON via the Verification Form.

Temporary License

  1. If you wish to be issued a provisional license, please indicate this on your application.
  2. Once all items have been received by the BON except the results of your fingerprints and background check, you may be issued a provisional license.
