Approximately 3-6 weeks for a license upon receipt of all required materials, but the Oregon Board of Nursing does not commit to a definitive timeline.
LICENCE RENEWAL
- Renewal cadence: Every 2 years at 12:01 AM on your birthday. If you were born in an even numbered year, your license will expire every 2 years during even years. If you were born in an odd numbered year, your license will expire every 2 years in odd numbered years. The renewal period opens 60 days before your birthday.
- Renewal fee: $145 if renewed on time. Late renewals will. incur an additional fee of $100.
- Required contact hours: Within 24 months of your first renewal, you must complete 7 hours of pain management-related CEU. One of the 7 total hours must be completed online. Afterwards, no continuing education is required.
- To qualify for renewal, you must have practiced 960 hours in the 5 years proceeding your renewal, have graduated from a nursing program in the past 5 years, or complete a reentry program. If you cannot meet the practice hour requirement, you must complete a nurse re-entry program while under limited licensure in order to be eligible to reactivate your license.
Important Things to Know
- The Oregon State Board of Nursing does not issue plastic license cards. Employers and nurses can verify licenses through the online license verification system, or the national Nursys system.
- If you are the spouse or domestic partner of an active service member, the OSBN may expedite your licensure endorsement process.
- Within 60 days of expiration, requires either minimum of 960 hours during past 5 years, complete re-entry program within 2 years preceding renewal, OR graduate from OSBN-approved nursing program within past 5 years.
- Expired more than 60 days – requires at least 960 hours during past 5 years (CEUs cannot be used) and complete background check (call OSBN at 971-673-0685 to request fingerprint packet)

Process
Permanent License
- Submit an application online and pay the fee
- Provide a valid United States Social Security Number
- Request verification of licensure via Nursys from your original state of licensure and the state where you are currently employed. If these states do not participate in Nursys, you will need to contact that state’s BON and request verification be sent to the Oregon BON.
- Contact your school and request that they send official sealed final transcripts including your graduation date and degree awarded to the Oregon BON.
- Provide evidence that you have worked 400 hours of verifiable practice within the past two years or have graduated from your initial nursing program within two years preceding submission of a completed application.
- If you have graduated over 5 years ago, provide a minimum of 960 practice hours at the level of licensure sought. You will include current or previous employers and the dates you worked for them in the application.
